Terms of Service
Effective August 4, 2026
These Terms of Service (“Terms”) govern your use of CheckYourTap.com (“the Service,” “we,” “us,” or “our”), an independent water-quality service funded and supported by Valiant Energy Solutions (“Valiant”), a Connecticut-based company that is also a water-treatment partner. By using CheckYourTap, you agree to these Terms.
1. Service Description
CheckYourTap is a free water quality lookup tool that allows Connecticut residents to view water quality data for their ZIP code. The Service queries publicly available data from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Connecticut state environmental agencies, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), and public data sources to generate ZIP-associated water-record reports. The Service also allows users to request a no-cost consultation with a vetted water quality partner (currently Valiant Energy Solutions) to discuss their options. Any water testing or treatment is a separate paid service.
2. Data Accuracy & Limitations
The water quality information provided by CheckYourTap is compiled from public data sources. While we strive for accuracy, you should understand the following limitations:
- City water data is based on public-system records associated with a ZIP. A ZIP may overlap multiple systems, and the report does not identify which utility serves a property or represent the exact water at a tap.
- Well water data is based on regional groundwater and area-well monitoring records, plus geology context when a governed release permits it. These are regional estimates. Private wells vary significantly, and a lab test of your specific well is the only way to know exactly what is in your water.
- Health guidelines rendered by the report come from exact governed EWG, California OEHHA, or cited peer-reviewed releases. EPA values are shown separately as legal, regulatory, measurement, or source context. Educational content may cite additional identified authorities.
- Reference comparisons use governed metadata when available. They are record-level comparisons, not individual exposure or medical assessments.
3. Not Medical or Legal Advice
CheckYourTap provides informational content only. Nothing on this site constitutes medical advice, legal advice, or a professional recommendation. If you have concerns about your water quality or its impact on your health, consult a qualified healthcare provider. If you have concerns about your water system’s compliance with federal or state regulations, consult a licensed environmental professional or your local health department.
4. Consultation Requests
When you submit a consultation request through CheckYourTap, your contact information and water quality context are shared with our vetted water partner for your area (currently Valiant Energy Solutions) for the purpose of providing you with a no-cost water quality consultation. Any testing or treatment they recommend is a separate paid service. By submitting a request, you consent to being contacted by that partner via the email address and/or phone number you provided. You may opt out of further communications at any time by contacting us.
5. Intellectual Property
The CheckYourTap name, design, data presentation, comparison calculations, and original content are the property of CheckYourTap and its data partners. The underlying water quality data is derived from public sources and is not proprietary. You may not reproduce, distribute, or create derivative works from the CheckYourTap-specific presentation of this data without written permission.
6. Limitation of Liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law:
- CheckYourTap is provided “as is” and “as available” without warranties of any kind, express or implied.
- We do not warrant that the data is complete, current, or error free. Public data sources may contain outdated information, and testing data may not reflect current conditions.
- CheckYourTap, its operators, and its partners shall not be liable for any damages arising from your use of or reliance on information provided by CheckYourTap, including but not limited to decisions about water treatment, filtration purchases, or health actions taken based on the reports.
- In no event shall our total liability exceed the amount you paid to use the Service (which is zero, as CheckYourTap is free).
7. Acceptable Use
You agree not to:
- Use automated tools to scrape or harvest the Service in a way that degrades it for others. This does not restrict the open dataset at /data. That data is published under CC-BY 4.0 and you may download, redistribute, and build on it, including commercially, with attribution. We would rather you cite it than re-scrape it.
- Submit false or misleading information in consultation request forms.
- Attempt to interfere with or compromise the security or availability of the Service.
- Reproduce or redistribute CheckYourTap reports in a way that implies endorsement or affiliation with CheckYourTap or its partners.
8. Governing Law
These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of Connecticut, without regard to its conflict of law provisions. Any disputes arising from these Terms or your use of CheckYourTap shall be resolved in the courts of the State of Connecticut.
