Privacy Policy
Effective August 4, 2026
CheckYourTap.com is an independent water-quality service, funded and supported by Valiant Energy Solutions, a Connecticut-based company that is also a water-treatment partner. We take your privacy seriously. This policy describes what information we collect, how we use it, and your rights regarding your data.
1. Information We Collect
We collect different types of information depending on how you use CheckYourTap:
Water Quality Lookups
When you search for a water quality report, you provide your ZIP code, water source type (city or well), and one or more household or pet selections. The ZIP and water-source type are sent to the report API. Household and pet selections are included in the report URL and used in the browser to prioritize exact, source-released context; they are not sent to the report API as a health or exposure profile. The lookup does not create a user account and is not written to the consultation-request database or tied to contact information unless you submit a separate form. As with other page and API requests, requested URLs and technical metadata may be processed in service, security, and analytics logs described below.
Consultation Requests
If you request a consultation through our contact form, you may provide your name, email address, phone number, and an optional message. This information is stored along with the report context submitted by the form (such as ZIP code, water type, record count, and evaluated comparison count) so the partner can respond to the request.
Marketing Attribution
If you arrive at CheckYourTap via a marketing link, standard UTM parameters (source, medium, campaign) from the URL may be stored with your consultation request to help us understand how people find our service.
AI Assistant Connectors
CheckYourTap can be used inside AI assistants (such as ChatGPT and Claude) through our connector. When you ask an assistant to check water records, it sends the ZIP code and water-source type needed to retrieve the record report. The lookup does not create a user account or consultation-request row, although normal service and security logs may process request metadata. The current connector is read-only: it does not email reports, submit consultation requests, or send us names, email addresses, phone numbers, or assistant conversation content.
Automatically Collected Usage Data
We use Google Analytics 4 to understand how visitors use CheckYourTap in aggregate. This automatically collects information such as pages visited, time spent on the site, device type, browser, and general geographic region. We send search events containing the selected water-source type and aggregate result counts, but remove entered ZIP codes. We also remove query parameters—including ZIP, household, and pet selections—from analytics page-location fields and do not send form-entered names, email addresses, phone numbers, or messages in analytics events. See Section 6 for details on analytics cookies.
2. How We Use Your Information
- Water quality lookups: To query public databases and generate a ZIP-associated water record report in real time.
- Consultation requests: To contact you about the water quality consultation you requested, using the report context you chose to submit.
- Service improvement: To understand aggregate search and report interactions without sending the entered ZIP code or form-entered contact information.
3. Data Sources
The water quality data presented in your report comes from public sources including the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Connecticut state agencies, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), and Connecticut state records. Exact health-protective comparisons currently rendered in the report come from governed EWG, California OEHHA, or explicitly cited peer-reviewed releases. EPA values are shown separately as legal, regulatory, measurement, or source context. Educational pages may also cite ATSDR, WHO, veterinary literature, and other identified primary or peer-reviewed sources.
4. Information Sharing
We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal information to third parties.
When you request a consultation, your contact information and water quality context may be shared with our vetted water partner for your area (currently Valiant Energy Solutions) for the sole purpose of fulfilling your consultation request.
We may disclose information if required by law, such as in response to a court order or subpoena, or to protect the safety of our users or the public.
5. Data Storage & Security
Consultation request data is stored on secure, encrypted servers hosted in the United States via Microsoft Azure. Access to personal data is restricted to authorized personnel of CheckYourTap and its data-infrastructure provider (Valiant Energy Solutions) who need it to fulfill your consultation request. We use industry-standard security measures to protect your information, but no method of transmission over the internet is 100% secure.
6. Analytics & Cookies
CheckYourTap uses Google Analytics 4 (GA4) to collect aggregate usage analytics. GA4 places small text files called cookies on your device to distinguish unique visitors and sessions. The cookies we use include:
- _ga — Distinguishes unique visitors. Expires after 2 years.
- _ga_<ID> — Maintains session state. Expires after 2 years.
These cookies use pseudonymous identifiers and do not contain the name, email address, or phone number entered into a consultation form. Google states that GA4 uses IP addresses at collection time to derive coarse location and discards them before the data is logged. See Google's regional data-collection documentation. CheckYourTap does not send form-entered contact fields in analytics events.
We use analytics data only in aggregate to understand which features are most useful, how visitors navigate the site, and where we can improve the experience.
Opt out: You can prevent Google Analytics from collecting your data by installing the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on. You can also clear or block cookies through your browser settings at any time.
7. Data Retention
Consultation request data is retained for as long as needed to complete your service request and for reasonable business record keeping. You may request deletion of your data at any time by contacting us (see Section 10).
8. Your Rights
You have the right to:
- Request a copy of any personal data we have stored about you.
- Request correction of inaccurate personal data.
- Request deletion of your personal data from our systems.
To exercise any of these rights, contact us by phone or email using the information in Section 10.
9. Children’s Privacy
CheckYourTap is not directed at children under 13. A parent or caregiver can select general household categories such as newborns, infants, toddlers, or children; the form does not ask for a child's name, birth date, or exact age. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us and we will promptly delete it.
